Synopsis

Edo in the 18th century. Owaka is the daughter of a wealthy merchant, and Matsukichi is her childhood friend. They're into each other, but Matsukichi's been cast out by his own family and now works as a firefighter. Things get complicated when Owaka's family starts arranging her marriage to someone else. Unable to shake her feelings for Matsukichi, Owaka's desperation spirals into something catastrophic—she accidentally sets off a massive fire that destroys large swaths of Edo. In the chaos and flames, she and Matsukichi cross paths again. What unfolds is an epic disaster story set against the burning backdrop of Japan's greatest city.
