Zou no Inai Doubutsuen
After the war, Hide promises his dying sister Miyoko that he'll take her to see a real elephant. When he visits the zoo to make good on that promise, an old man tells him about something that happened during the war—a day when the zoo's animals were killed off. It's based on actual events at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. During WW2, the zoo decided to slaughter its dangerous animals out of fear that Allied bombing might destroy the enclosures and let them loose on the city. They killed them however they could: starvation, poison, bullets, beheadings. Tokyo did get heavily bombed over a year later, but Ueno Zoo itself was never hit.
