Miyazawa Kenji Collection - The Acorns and the Wildcat
Donguri to Yamaneko
The Acorns and the Wildcat is a short film unlike anything else in anime—a picture-book adaptation of a story by the creator of Night on the Galactic Railroad and Gauche the Cellist. Instead of acting out the narrative dramatically, a narrator reads Kenji's prose aloud while illustrated scenes play out with subtle animation. The visual style has a distinctly familiar quality, thanks to animator Yasuhiro Nagura, who directed the animation on Mamoru Oshii's 1986 feature Angel's Egg. There's also the fun bit of trivia that Kenji's wildcat supposedly inspired Miyazaki's design for Totoro. Rather than relying on dialogue and plot mechanics, the film succeeds entirely on the strength of Kenji's lyrical prose and magical storytelling voice. Paired with atmospheric music and gorgeous artwork, it's a quietly wonderful little film that shouldn't work but absolutely does.
