Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland hit American theaters in 1992, but the film had a pretty messy development history. Studio Ghibli—the studio behind classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro—was actually involved early on. They made a test pilot back in 1984, and then Osamu Dezaki directed another one in 1987. There had even been an earlier pilot from the mid-1970s by Sadao Tsukioka, though that one never went anywhere.
