It's year 0071 of the Cosmic Era. The neutral space colony Heliopolis sits caught between a brutal galactic war: on one side are Coordinators—genetically enhanced humans who fled Earth after facing persecution—and on the other are Naturals, the unaltered humans still living on the planet below. When ZAFT, a military faction of Coordinators, attacks Heliopolis to steal five cutting-edge mobile suits called Gundams, everything changes for Kira Yamato, a young Coordinator student just trying to get through university. ZAFT manages to grab four of the machines, but Kira manages to pilot the last one—the Strike—and narrowly escapes. Thrown into the conflict, Kira and his college friends end up joining the Archangel, a warship crewed by the Earth Alliance. From that point on, they're forced to confront the brutal reality of war and everything it costs.
