Synopsis

Emma's spent most of her life working as a maid for Kelly Stownar, a retired governess who's strict but fair. She's good at what she does, genuinely loves her job, and has made peace with her place in the world. Men notice her—she's beautiful and kind—but nothing ever comes of it. She's been waiting for real love, and doesn't expect to find it anywhere. William is the eldest son of the Jones family, newly wealthy merchants who've recently clawed their way into the gentry. He was Mrs. Stownar's ward growing up, and when he visits years later, he sees Emma and falls hard. He's genuine and likeable, and his persistent but good-natured pursuit actually works—Emma falls for him too. Except Victorian England doesn't do cross-class romance. The social hierarchy is rigid as national borders, and Emma and William's relationship faces serious pushback from every direction. The question becomes whether their feelings are strong enough to survive in a world determined to keep them apart.
