Before Levi became the legendary captain everyone knows, he was just trying to survive in the Underground—the capital's massive dumping ground. He ran his own small criminal operation with two friends, Isabel and Farlan, barely scraping by. Things were looking pretty hopeless until a deal came their way: Nicholas Lobov, a guy leading the anti-expedition faction, offered them aboveground citizenship in exchange for assassinating Erwin Smith, a Survey Corps squad leader. When Levi and Erwin finally meet, Erwin immediately recognizes Levi's incredible combat skills. Instead of turning him in to the authorities, he offers Levi a choice: join the Survey Corps or face the Military Police and prison time. Suddenly the trio is in close proximity to their target, and they figure this is their shot at freedom—and their escape from the Underground. But they're about to discover that the surface world isn't the paradise they imagined, and that freedom comes with its own brutal cost. This anime adapts the popular spin-off manga, showing how two of Attack on Titan's most important characters first crossed paths and what went down during the 23rd expedition beyond the walls.
