Grandma and Her Ghosts
Mofa Ya Ma
The seventh lunar month is ghost month in the Chinese calendar. DouDou arrives at his grandma's place on the first day of July, right when the gates between worlds open up. His grandma performs Taoist rituals to honor the dead and commune with spirits. But then DouDou makes a mistake—he accidentally releases a devil trapped in an urn. The devil takes over the family cat and convinces DouDou that if he puts his grandma's tears on his eyelids, he'll be able to see the invisible ghosts around him. What DouDou doesn't realize is that this whole thing is part of the devil's scheme to devour all the spirits. The film has that unmistakable Hayao Miyazaki vibe, especially reminiscent of My Neighbor Totoro, but it's grounded in authentic Taiwanese culture and folklore.
