The 73rd graduating class from Kibi's Defense University is supposed to be doing a routine test run of the brand new starship Amaterasu. It's meant to be a nice capstone before they head home and finish their degrees. But then they get word that some aggressive kingdom has declared war on Kibi—and worse, their government just rolls over and surrenders without a fight. That's when the cadets decide to take matters into their own hands. They commandeer the Amaterasu and launch their own resistance campaign. To fund the whole operation, they strike a deal with a galactic news network to document everything they do. Sounds great in theory, except now they're basically the stars of a reality show where the stakes are actual combat. People can and will die for the ratings.
