After NERV's failed attempt to retrieve the Spears of Longinus and trigger the Human Instrumentality Project, the Fourth Impact is mostly averted—though the damage is still severe. Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Shikinami, and Rei Ayanami escape to Village 3, a human settlement that's managed to avoid the worst of Earth's destruction. Here, Shinji finally gets a chance to process what he's been through and build something resembling a normal life, away from piloting Evangelions. But NERV isn't done. The organization begins preparing for another Impact attempt to restart Instrumentality. When WILLE's flagship arrives at the village, Shinji makes a choice—he boards the ship, convinced he can actually make a difference by piloting an Evangelion again. As the truth about WILLE and NERV's plans unfolds and the two factions edge toward open conflict, humanity's fate once more comes down to whether Shinji can pull through.
