Synopsis

Momosuke Yamaoka is a struggling writer trying to salvage his career by collecting a hundred ghost stories, so he travels across Edo-period Japan looking for material. While wandering deep into the mountains, he stumbles across a monk named Mataichi—who warns him to turn back. Momosuke ignores the advice and witnesses Mataichi and two companions commit murder. Turns out the trio isn't just random killers; they investigate paranormal cases and execute their own brand of justice on whoever they deem guilty. As Momosuke continues hunting for stories, he keeps running into the outlaws and gets pulled deeper into their world with each encounter. The further he goes, the more he has to wrestle with the morality of what they do and figure out where the line actually is between human and supernatural.
