The story follows Chenxiang, a boy born of a goddess mother and mortal father. His uncle Erlang Shen, a powerful god, kills his father and captures both mother and son. During the fight, Chenxiang's mother loses a magical Lotus Lantern—a treasure whose light can repel evil—before being imprisoned beneath a mountain as punishment for her forbidden relationship. Despite his youth, Chenxiang escapes from Erlang Shen's palace in the sacred mountains, grabbing the Lotus Lantern his mother dropped. Along the way, he encounters various figures from Chinese mythology who aid his journey. As he grows older and stronger, Chenxiang becomes determined to free his mother and confront his uncle in battle. Somewhere in all this, he also finds love.
