On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima. That morning, a young boy named Shigeru headed out to work as a building excavator, his mother's homemade bento tucked under his arm. He never came home. When his mother finally found what remained of her son, there was something beside him—his bento box, completely charred black. This anime adapts "Makkuro na Obentou" (The Charred Lunchbox), a book by Kodama Tatsuharu with illustrations by Kitajima Shinpei. The actual bento box featured in the story can be seen at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
