Synopsis

Yotarou is a former yakuza member who just got out of prison with a completely different goal in mind: he wants to become a rakugo storyteller instead of going back to crime. A performance by the legendary rakugo master Yakumo Yuurakutei while he was inside inspired him so much that he tracks the guy down and begs to become his apprentice. Yakumo agrees, taking on his first student. During training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, a sharp-tongued young woman who's been living with Yakumo since her father, the talented rakugo performer Sukeroku Yuurakutei, died. She's got a real gift for rakugo herself, and Yotarou gets drawn to Sukeroku's style—which is pretty different from what Yakumo teaches him. Watching this awakens old memories in Yakumo, bringing back feelings about a promise he made to his greatest rival back in the day. The series jumps between past and present as it explores rakugo itself, the bonds it creates between people, and what it takes to dedicate your life to keeping this traditional art form alive.
