Synopsis

Takashi Natsume can see youkai—strange supernatural creatures that no one else believes in. Bounced around foster homes his whole life, he's learned to keep his mouth shut about it. By now he's convinced himself that connecting with people is pointless. Everything changes when he accidentally breaks a magical seal and releases Madara, a powerful spirit disguised as a cute cat. Madara immediately recognizes him as the spitting image of his late grandmother, Reiko—a girl who was ostracized by society but became a legend in the youkai world. She'd created the Book of Friends, a catalog of youkai she'd defeated, and it's been sitting in Natsume's hands the whole time. Natsume has zero interest in using the book's power to summon these creatures. Instead, he wants to keep it safe—partly as a way to honor his grandmother's memory, partly to keep it away from youkai who'd love to get their hands on it. So he strikes a deal with Madara: the book is his once Natsume dies, but until then, Madara becomes his bodyguard and constant companion (going by the ridiculous name Nyanko-sensei). With this new purpose driving him forward—freeing the youkai his grandmother sealed away—Natsume finds his relationships with both the supernatural and human worlds gradually starting to thaw.
