It's spring 1956, about a decade after the end of World War II. Rieko Sakamoto starts her job as a new teacher at an elementary school in Kiba, a downtown Tokyo neighborhood. Around the same time, Shizu Miyanaga transfers into the sixth-grade class—she's moved from Kobe and immediately makes an impression. Smart, attractive, and talented both athletically and academically, Shizu dreams of becoming a singer. She quickly becomes the most popular student in class. Akira, the class president whose father is a carpenter, finds himself developing feelings for her.
