Synopsis

At eighteen, Chu Yuan becomes emperor of Chu State with a lot riding on his shoulders. Border tensions with Xinan are escalating, and he has to tread carefully—one wrong move could be disastrous. But before he can really prove himself, Duan Baiyue, the young king of Xinan, steps in and crushes the rebellion single-handedly. It's a huge relief for Chu Yuan, though it comes with a cost: the people start seeing Duan Baiyue as their hero instead. Two years pass, and Xinan's power keeps growing. Rumors start flying that Duan Baiyue is positioning himself to take over Chu entirely. One winter, while standing by a plum tree, Chu Yuan finds himself furious and confused—and suddenly remembers a promise the two of them made years ago. Things come to a head when a duke visiting from Ahnu, one of Chu's key allies, turns up dead in the streets.
