Jane's mother dies in childbirth, and her father—a wealthy English aristocrat—remarries a woman who brings her own son, William, into the family. William resents his new father and despises Jane from the start. Growing up together, Jane and George (her half-brother) become obsessed with building a flying machine. George becomes convinced that a legendary blue sand exists somewhere in Asia, one that holds the key to powered flight. He sets out to find it but is eventually reported executed for treason. William vanishes around the same time. Then Jane receives an unsigned letter containing a small handful of pale blue sand—sand that floats in midair. She's certain George is still alive, and that letter is proof. She abandons her old life and heads east to find him, clear his name, and uncover the truth. Along the way, she meets companions who help her navigate the mysteries ahead. Though as her journey unfolds, Jane discovers that some mysteries might be better left unsolved.
