Synopsis

Kaoru Nishimi is an introverted classical pianist who's just started high school in Kyushu. After moving around constantly his whole life, he's resigned himself to another year of isolation and loneliness. Then he meets Sentarou Kawabuchi, a troublemaking delinquent with a serious passion for jazz. Sentarou's infectious love of the genre rubs off on Kaoru, who decides to give jazz a shot. Through the music, Kaoru finds himself opening up for the first time, and he makes his first real friend. Soon he's playing piano at informal jazz sessions held in the basement of a record shop owned by fellow student Ritsuko Mukae. As Kaoru discovers how satisfying it is to use his talent to entertain both himself and others, what starts as a casual summer becomes something unforgettable. Sakamichi no Apollon follows three unlikely people connected by their love of jazz, exploring how friendship and music can change your life.
