Jackie Rhodes is a British girl living in Kenya who rescues a sickly bushbaby, names him Murphy, and nurses him back to health. She and Murphy have a string of adventures across Kenya with her family and friends, encountering wild animals and dealing with poachers along the way. When Jackie's father gets posted back to England, she faces having to leave Africa behind. But before she goes, Jackie, Murphy, and Tembo—her father's friend—embark on one final journey across the dangerous savannah to outrun both poachers and corrupt cops. During this trek, Jackie trains Murphy to fend for himself in the wild so she can release him into his natural habitat before she has to leave.
