My Master Has No Tail
Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai
When the Taishou era kicked off, tanuki—those shape-shifting raccoon dogs—lost their edge. People used to fall for their tricks all the time, but modern technology made that pretty much impossible. Most tanuki gave up, but Mameda wasn't ready to let the tradition die. This young tanuki girl headed to Osaka determined to carry on her father's legacy and finally pull off some good cons. Things didn't go as planned. Mameda couldn't trick anyone, and she ended up getting chased by an angry mob. She managed to duck into a theater to escape, where she caught a rakugo performance by a master named Bunko Daikokutei. She was completely captivated—the way the storyteller brought everything to life was incredible. Mameda realized rakugo was exactly what she'd been looking for and begged Bunko to take her on as an apprentice. Bunko wasn't interested in teaching at first, but Mameda's sheer determination won her over. Once she agreed, things got intense. Between learning taiko drums, working at the theater, and memorizing plays, Mameda had to go all-in if she wanted to actually master rakugo. Because unlike the old tricks her kind used to pull, this was the one art form that might actually still have the power to captivate people.
