Blood and Heart: The Legendary Life of a Japanese Youth in China
Xue Yu Xin
This is the story of Megumi Sunahara, a Japanese-born PLA soldier whose life sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter of Chinese military history—the ethnic Japanese who served in the People's Liberation Army. Born in Kyushu in 1933, Sunahara moved to Northeast China as a child. When Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, he found himself stranded, unable to return home. He ended up working as a farmhand for a landlord in Liaoning, herding cattle. In 1948, he enlisted in the PLA under the Chinese name Zhang Rongqing. From there, he fought in some of the war's most pivotal campaigns: the Liaoshen Campaign, the Pingjin Campaign, and later battles during the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War, dedicating himself fully to the revolutionary cause.
