Right after World War II ended, Tokyo was still digging itself out of the wreckage. In a shadowy corner of the black market, there was a ramshackle soba joint. It was closing time when a man walked in and ordered: "One moongaze with soba"—raw egg on the side. He was Moongaze Ginji, the legendary Fast Food Grifter, and he was about to pull off another quiet con. Flash forward to 1960, during the massive protests against the Japan-US Security Treaty. Word on the street was that Foxy Croquette O-Gin, a beautiful and notorious grifter, had vanished without a trace. Through those years of economic boom, there was Crying Inumaru, a no-good drifter wandering the streets. Then Cold Badger Masa showed up—and his scandalous death revealed that Fast Food Grifters were real, operating in the shadows of Japanese society. Beefbowl Ushigoro single-handedly took down a major gyudon chain. And you can't talk about this world without mentioning Hamburger Tetsu, who basically revolutionized the entire fast food industry. Fast Food Grifters are like ghosts that come and go with whatever people are eating. They're the rebel heroes who left their mark on the underground side of food culture, staring it all down with steel in their eyes. And their legend is alive and well.
