The story takes place in Minami Shimabara, a city in Nagasaki Prefecture famous as the birthplace of the Shimabara Rebellion, a major upheaval during Japan's early Edo period. It's where Shirou, a third-year junior high student, lives out his everyday life with his friends. One summer, Shirou's childhood friend Akane comes back to town after living in Tokyo. Shirou and Akane go for a walk around Minami Shimabara with Tokiya, another friend from way back. As the three of them navigate nostalgia and more complicated feelings, they run into a strange little creature called Goron. This chance encounter sets off a chain of events that shakes up their city all over again.
