Synopsis

A squid-like alien called a Happian crashes on Earth with a mission to spread joy throughout the universe. Before he can be captured by humans, a sullen little girl named Shizuka Kuze finds him, feeds him, and names him Takopii. Feeling grateful, Takopii becomes obsessed with making her smile. Easier said than done. Shizuka's got it rough—she's bullied at school, her dad's gone, and her mom's always working. None of this really registers with Takopii though, since he's pretty clueless about human problems. The one bright spot in Shizuka's life is her dog Chappy, and seeing how much they mean to each other only strengthens Takopii's resolve. His efforts to cheer her up tend to backfire spectacularly, but Takopii refuses to give up. He's determined to figure out how humans actually work and finally get Shizuka to crack a genuine smile.
