In 2021, a parasitic virus called Gastrea infects humans and transforms them into monsters. Humanity survives behind massive walls made of Varanium—the only material that actually damages Gastrea. To fight back, the government pairs young girls called Initiators (who carry trace amounts of the virus and gain superhuman powers from it) with adult partners known as Promoters. These two-person teams go out on missions to eliminate Gastrea monsters and protect what's left of civilization. Black Bullet follows one such pair: Enju Aihara, an Initiator, and Satomi Rentaro, her Promoter. Together they take on increasingly dangerous missions to keep their hometown of Tokyo safe from the Gastrea threat.
