Armored Fleet Dairugger XV
Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV
Dairugger XV started out as an exploration robot and peacekeeper. Earth was doing great, so the Terran League's president green-lit a mission to explore beyond the galaxy. Things went south fast when the Galbeston Empire attacked the exploration ship Rugger-Guard. That's when Dairugger, a super robot, got deployed to protect Earth. The plot gets weirder from there—the team ends up having to help the Galbeston people find a new planet before theirs explodes, and overthrow their tyrannical emperor in the process. The robot itself is made up of 15 separate units called "Ruggers" that combine together, divided into three assault teams: Land, Air, and Sea. The whole 15-piece design was inspired by rugby, since a full rugby union team has exactly 15 players. Unlike the American Voltron series, the Japanese original has nothing to do with King of the Beasts GoLion. When the show came to the U.S., they rebranded the Galbeston Empire as the Drule Empire and cut out a bunch of violence and sexual content to make it suitable for general audiences.
