In 2099, Earth's axis shifts dramatically—the planet starts rotating at a 90-degree angle to where it used to. Three years of catastrophic natural disasters follow, and when it's finally over, nearly the entire population is gone. Out of ten billion people, only two million survive, and they're all living on the moon. Some of them head back to Earth to rebuild civilization in seven new cities. But the colonists still on the moon get paranoid about their former neighbors. They're worried the people down on Earth might become a threat, so they launch a ring of defensive satellites into orbit designed to keep the Earth colonists trapped on their newly repopulated world.
