Synopsis

When Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo browse the National Library, they find an old book that glows red and sucks them both inside. They land in a strange world where slave traders attack, but a young man named Tamahome—marked with a Chinese symbol on his forehead—saves them. Then the red light yanks Yui back out, leaving her behind. Desperate to find Yui, Miaka gets Tamahome to help her. Things get complicated when they meet the emperor, Hotohori, who's convinced Miaka is the priestess he's been waiting for. According to legend, if she can gather seven Celestial Warriors, she can summon the god Suzaku and get her wishes granted—which would solve her problems and save his dying kingdom. He talks her into it. Back at the library, Yui finds herself alone, stuck watching everything unfold from her side of the book as Miaka faces danger after danger inside the story.
