Arte, a young woman from a wealthy family, has always wanted to be an artist—to actually contribute to this flourishing era. But when her father dies, she loses her only real supporter. Her family immediately expects her to marry a nobleman and settle into a respectable life as a wife, which is definitely not what Arte has in mind. Desperate to pursue her dreams, she hits the streets looking for a master craftsman willing to take her on as an apprentice. That turns out to be way harder than she expected. Being a woman trying to become an artist in the 1500s means constant rejection—nobody thinks women are capable of serious craftsmanship, so most won't even give her a chance. She finally gets lucky when Leo, a well-respected artisan, agrees to take her on. He doesn't have an apprentice anyway, so he figures why not. From there, Arte's life changes completely. She leaves her comfortable noble household behind and has to earn her place in Leo's workshop, dealing with all the grueling realities of apprenticeship while working toward becoming a true master artist herself.
