Synopsis

Set in 1920s Japan, Haikara-san ga Tooru follows Benio, a spirited tomboy who refuses to live by anyone else's rules. She's athletic, outspoken, and determined to do things her own way. When she keeps running into a charming half-German soldier named Shinobu, he's always there to bail her out of awkward situations—which only annoys her more. Then comes the shock: her family has arranged a marriage, and her new husband is Shinobu himself. What follows is messy and complicated. Shinobu gets pulled into military service, Benio struggles with the reality of married life, and she has to navigate the expectations of both her new in-laws and her employer. And looming over everything is the impending Kanto earthquake.
