The Day the Earth Moved
Chikyuu ga Ugoita Hi
Tsuyoshi Takahashi was a sixth grader living in eastern Kobe with his parents and younger brother. He was driven and ambitious, dreaming of getting into an elite private school—so much so that studying consumed most of his time. He resented having to help people out whenever they asked, since it meant losing precious study hours. Everything changed in the early morning of January 17, 1995, when a massive earthquake devastated Kobe City. Tsuyoshi and his family barely made it out of their collapsed home and took shelter at his school. There, living alongside other evacuees and dealing with rationing, Tsuyoshi began to learn hard lessons about community and compassion—especially watching the tireless work of volunteers around him.
