Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Jirou Azuma has a gift—he can talk to animals. He lives peacefully with his grandfather, and they both come from a long line of ninja, keeping their combat skills sharp to honor the family tradition. That peaceful life ends the moment he rescues what looks like an ordinary black cat named Ragou. Turns out Ragou isn't a cat at all. He's a mononoke, a demonic spirit locked in an ancient war with humanity. When another hostile mononoke tracks Ragou down, Jirou jumps in to protect him using his ninja training. He gets killed for his trouble—a fatal wound that should be the end of it. But Ragou makes a choice. Instead of absorbing Jirou's life force to heal himself, he transfers his own power into the dying teenager. Jirou survives, and the energy transfer gives him incredible supernatural abilities that blend perfectly with his shinobi skills. The whole thing gets witnessed by Ryousuke Shiba, an agent for the Bureau of Espionage whose whole job is hunting down dangerous mononoke. Impressed by what he sees, Shiba recruits Jirou and his grandfather to join a new task force called Black Torch. Their mission: take down powerful mononoke before they can hurt anyone else.
