Toei Animation and Dynamo Pictures created these Gegege no Kitarou VR/3D films to celebrate Toei's 50 years with the franchise. The first one drops you into the youkai world when okuribi—those massive spirit bonfires lit during Obon—pull you across to the other side. The second film has you actually lost in that world, trying to get back home with help from Medama Oyaji guiding you along the way. Initially screened at various expos and film festivals, the films got a wider theatrical rollout starting March 2019 at VR-equipped cinemas, including venues like Lina World amusement park in Yamagata. Later on, around autumn 2019, they became available to rent or access if you owned a Lenovo Mirage Solo with Daydream headset.
