Synopsis

The world's resources are dwindling and pollution is spiraling out of control, so the International Scientific Organization forms to tackle these global problems. But they've got a big problem of their own: Gallactor, an international crime syndicate bent on world domination. The group takes orders from Generalissimo X, a mysterious alien being who communicates through his Earth-based commander, the masked Berg Katse. To fight back, Dr. Nambu recruits five young fighters into an elite combat unit called Gatchaman—the Science Commandos. Decked out in distinctive bird-themed costumes and armed with specialized scientific weapons, the team is more than a match for Gallactor's robot army. The squad is led by Ken (the Eagle), a level-headed strategist. He's backed up by the impulsive Joe (the Condor), the graceful Jun (the Swan), the enthusiastic kid Jinpei (the Swallow), and the powerhouse Ryu (the Horned Owl). While each member has their own arsenal, the team's real ace is the Phoenix—their transforming aircraft that can shift into a flaming projectile powerful enough to destroy nearly anything Gallactor throws at them. The series follows these five as they stay on constant alert, racing into action whenever Gallactor makes its next move toward global conquest.
