It's 5053, and two French aristocrats—Viscount Albert de Morcerf and Baron Franz d'Epinay—are hitting up Carnival on the moon city of Luna. While Franz is there just to party, Albert's looking for something deeper, something to give his life meaning. He gets way more than he expected when he locks eyes with the Count of Monte Cristo at an opera—a mysterious, charming guy who clearly made his own way up in the world. After some maneuvering, Albert befriends the Count and brings him into French high society. But the Count's got his own agenda. He's been waiting years for his chance to get revenge on the people who destroyed him, and now he's finally going to make it happen. Gankutsuou follows Albert and the Count as their lives become tangled together, watching what each of them pays as the Count pursues his vengeance.
