Centuries after the 20th century, humanity destroyed Earth's ecosystem with nuclear and biological weapons. The planet is now a toxic wasteland where most species have gone extinct—we're heading toward a sixth mass extinction event. To survive, humans built floating sky cities and brought endangered animals and plants up there. Over generations, these animals evolved in isolation, developing language and walking upright through artificial genetic engineering. They built their own civilization and forgot all about the ruined world below. That changes when a single plant seed drifts into one of the sky cities. Three kids—Kui, Hiruma, and Root—find it and become obsessed with exploring the outside world. They sneak out, not realizing that once they set foot on the ground below, they'll never be able to come back.
