Anju to Zushioumaru
Anju and Zushioumaru grow up in the countryside with their father, a man who manages the emperor's hunting lands and instills in his kids a deep respect for nature and animals. When the local lord falsely accuses him of burning the grounds, the siblings flee with their mother toward Kyoto, hoping to reach the emperor and secure his pardon. The journey goes wrong. They're deceived into boarding the wrong ship and end up separated from their mother, then sold into slavery. Their new master works them brutally, using threats and violence to keep them in line. It's only through the unexpected kindness of the master's son, Saburou, that they find any relief from their suffering.
