Kamatari is a member of Juppongatana—and openly in love with Makoto Shishio, though his feelings aren't reciprocated. He fights with an enormous scythe attached to a ball and chain, a weapon so heavy it matches his outsized personality.
Despite his feminine appearance, Kamatari is male. What defines him most is his insecurity. He's acutely aware he can't match Soujiro's combat skill, Hoji's intellect and cunning, or Yumi's beauty in Shishio's eyes. His fierce loyalty and high energy partly compensate for this—he throws himself into battle with genuine passion, but it's clearly driven by a need to prove himself rather than cold tactical thinking.
He gets defeated at Aoi-Ya by Kaoru and Misao, which marks a turning point. After Shishio falls, Cho reveals that Kamatari ends up working as a spy for the Japanese government.
