Zane shows up in "Beauty and the Breeder" as a Pokémon Breeder who's been tight with Suzie since nursery school. The two bonded over shared ambitions to make it big in breeding, and both started out with Vulpix—Zane's eventually became a Ninetales. But while Suzie believed a Pokémon's worth came down to personality and care, Zane was convinced that physical appearance was what really mattered. He decided to prove his philosophy by entering them both in a Pokémon Beauty Contest.
Competing against Suzie's Vulpix with his Ninetales forced him to reconsider. By the end, he'd come around to seeing that Suzie and Brock's approach to breeding had just as much merit as his own. He apparently liked the idea of teamwork too—he asked Suzie if she'd want to run a Pokémon beauty salon together, and after she checked in with Brock, she agreed.
Zane's one-episode appearance actually ended up being pretty significant for the overall story. Brock had been stuck on Suzie for a while, but watching her and Zane click made him realize they were actually better suited to each other. He backed off and even came to respect Zane as a skilled breeder in his own right.
