Miwa is a recurring character who shows up throughout the series—sometimes as a customer, sometimes as narrator. She first visits Eden Hall to get Ryū's help solving a mystery that's haunted her since childhood: identifying a spirit that was in a bottle she broke years ago.
The backstory is bittersweet. When Miwa was young, her father wanted to modernize her grandfather's traditional inn into a hotel-style bar to keep up with changing times. Her grandfather refused, and the disagreement drove a wedge between them. One day, her father called the old man and invited him to try a special drink he'd made as a peace offering. In her excitement, young Miwa grabbed the bottle and ran toward her grandfather—but tripped. The bottle shattered, and whatever was inside spilled everywhere. She's carried guilt about that moment ever since, convinced that if they'd shared that drink together, her father and grandfather wouldn't have drifted apart.
Tragedy struck not long after: Miwa's parents died in a car accident, and with them went any chance of learning what that special drink was called. By the time she reaches Ryū years later, it's the one question left unanswered.
With Ryū's help, Miwa finally gets her answer—the drink was Suntory's Kakubin (called "Kaku" in the show)—and more importantly, she gets to see her grandfather taste it at last. That resolution turns her into a regular at Eden Hall. She becomes a familiar face, often narrating episodes and occasionally bringing friends along. There's even an episode where she nurses Ryū back to health when he falls ill, though she can't manage to find him a doctor. In the manga, she works for Kamishima, one of the bar's earliest patrons.
