Coaly was among the civilians evacuated aboard the White Base. When the ship passed the Grand Canyon and some evacuees decided to disembark, Coaly and his mother left with them. His mother Persia had chosen to stay behind initially since they were close to her hometown, but she later learned that St Anges had been destroyed in the fighting. Coaly was too young to really understand how much that loss affected her.
