Rin is the last survivor of Anotsu's massacre of the Ittō-ryū, and with it, she inherited her father's sword school, the Mutenichi-ryū. Her swordsmanship is nothing special, but her drive to avenge her family's slaughter is fierce enough to make her hire Manji as a bodyguard and push forward with her mission.
She's best known for her conflicted nature—constantly questioning whether her revenge quest is even justified, and terrified that she's becoming the very thing she's fighting against. Anotsu loves to point this out, especially when she abandons her school's sword teachings in favor of throwing knives. It's a sore spot that haunts her throughout the series.
Early on, Rin tries hard to seem grown-up but comes across as pretty childish. As the story progresses, though, she genuinely matures and sheds most of that naivety. Fans often note her gradual development as one of the series' strengths.
As for Manji, Rin has feelings for him—she even kisses him while he's sleeping in volume fourteen—but he's largely oblivious to or unresponsive to her affection. It's a one-sided thing that hangs over their dynamic.
Her arsenal is unusual for the time: a Chinese sword called Kutoneshirika that she keeps in a toju (a purse-like scabbard), a tantō dagger, and a set of throwing knives known as Ogunchu, or "Golden Wasps." While her actual combat skill is middling, she's still more proficient with weapons than most women of her era, and carrying multiple weapons makes her stand out.
