Hanabi Kawai trained at Setouchi Keijo Training School, where she ranked third in the Elite Class. After graduating, she joined Kyoto Branch in the Kansai region as a B-Rank player under mentor Kyoko Shirayuki. She eventually accumulated enough points to advance to A-Rank status.
