Maribel Hearn is a university student in Kyoto who majors in relativistic psychology. She co-founded the "Secret Sealing Club" with her friend Renko Usami, a two-person organization that officially describes itself as a necromancy club—though they're not actually interested in raising the dead. Instead, Maribel and Renko investigate other worlds and paranormal phenomena, with a particular focus on Gensoukyou, the Netherworld, and the Moon. They're likely among the only people from the outside world who even know Gensoukyou exists.
Maribel has no actual connection to Gensoukyou herself, but frequently visits it through dreams. She struggles with distinguishing dream from reality, at least when it comes to that place—and she believes subjective experience is more truthful than objective fact anyway. Her family has possessed the ability to perceive boundaries since ancient times, and despite it being forbidden, they've sought to explore other worlds. This drive clearly runs through Maribel as well, and she and Renko seem almost uniquely positioned to pursue it.
