Tomoko is the main character of Watamote, and she's basically the embodiment of social awkwardness. She genuinely wants friends—and yeah, a boyfriend too—but everything about her works against that goal. She's shy, anxious around people, and honestly just doesn't know how to talk to anyone outside her family.
High school felt like a fresh start to her. New school, new people, a chance to actually be someone different and popular. She's got all these plans to make a good impression on her classmates and finally turn things around. The problem? She never actually follows through. She procrastinates, chickens out, and somehow manages to sabotage herself every time. It's painful and funny in equal measure—which is kind of the whole point of the series.
Her appearance and general lack of social experience don't help matters either. But Tomoko keeps trying anyway, even though her track record suggests she probably shouldn't.
