Red Skull
Best known as Nazi Germany's most feared operative, the Red Skull served as the public face of Hitler's terror campaigns—letting the Führer maintain his image as a statesman while the Skull handled the dirty work. He ran Nazi intelligence, terrorism, and sabotage operations across Europe with brutal effectiveness during the early war years. His reputation became so legendary that the U.S. government felt compelled to create their answer: Captain America, the only successful recipient of the lost Operation Rebirth serum.
The two men became instant rivals. Throughout World War II, they clashed repeatedly until a final confrontation left the Skull buried under rubble and exposed to an experimental gas that put him into suspended animation for decades.
HYDRA eventually discovered and revived him in the modern era. Rather than serve the terrorist organization, the Skull took control of his cell and resumed his old obsessions: conquering the world and destroying Captain America once and for all.
