Sylvester is a minor character from "A Farfetch'd Tale" who works as a lumberjack in Ilex Forest alongside his boss Yosaku (his father in the English dub). The two of them harvest trees and process them into Charcoal.
When Ash first meets him, Sylvester's having trouble getting his Farfetch'd to obey—specifically, he keeps commanding it to use "Cutting Attack" instead of just "Cut," which is why the Pokémon ignores him. Ash points out the mistake, and once Sylvester corrects his approach, things start improving. But the real turning point comes when Team Rocket steals Farfetch'd. After Sylvester and the others manage to rescue it, the Pokémon finally realizes its trainer actually cares about it and becomes genuinely willing to help with the logging work.
Grateful for Ash's help in straightening things out, Sylvester and his father send the group off with some Charcoal as thanks.
