Zabuza Momochi hails from Kirigakure, where he earned the nickname "Demon of the Hidden Mist" after a brutal graduation ceremony. During the village's ritual combat between young graduates, Zabuza killed every single peer he faced—a massacre so complete it ended the tradition entirely. He rose through the ranks to join the Seven Shinobi Swordsmen of the Mist, claiming his signature zanbatō in the process, and served in Kirigakure's ANBU before attempting a coup against the Mizukage. The assassination plot failed, forcing him to flee the country. Desperate for funds to finance another attempt at power, Zabuza turned to mercenary work as a hired killer with no particular loyalties.
At some point he found a young orphan named Haku and took him in, framing the relationship as one of master and tool. Haku became fiercely devoted to him anyway, learning everything Zabuza had to teach and standing ready to protect him when needed.
Zabuza's reputation as an assassin is built on genuine skill. He's a master of water jutsu—creating massive dragons and waterfalls from seemingly nothing—but his real specialty is stealth. He blankets entire areas in mist to disorient opponents, then hunts them by sound alone using his ANBU training. The Silent Homicide Technique lets him kill without ever being detected.
