Yako is the first character we meet in the manga, a 16-year-old high school girl whose father's death remains unsolved. When Neuro literally crashes into her life—desecrating her father's shrine in the process—he promises to help her find answers. She agrees, and the two quickly fall into their dynamic: Yako becomes the public face of their detective partnership while Neuro works behind the scenes as her "assistant."
She's best known for her absolutely legendary appetite and the cast-iron stomach to match it. More importantly, though, she has a genuine talent for reading people that often proves useful when Neuro hits a wall—which happens, since he's a demon and doesn't exactly understand how humans tick. There's something about the way she thinks that lets her get through to him too. She's explained it herself: the way Neuro treats puzzles like food and information like oxygen is similar to how she'd feel searching for oysters underwater. It just clicks for her in a way it doesn't for most people.
Neuro likes to mess with her, though he occasionally acknowledges when she does something right—always in that condescending tone of his. What's interesting is how unflappable she stays even in genuinely dangerous situations, like when she gets kidnapped by Sai. Whether she was always that calm or if Neuro's chaos just wore her down is never really confirmed. Either way, her actual detective skills steadily improve over the course of the series, becoming especially noticeable after the Aya Asia case.
